Fly a rebel flag

Dear Viewers,

This week in book chat I have been reading, Fly A Rebel Flag, It is a book about the Gold Mining and the Eureka Stockade period.

This story was set in Ballarat. It is about the Eureka stockade and about how people lived on the gold fields. This book was set From 1851 to 1856.

On the goldfields people were treated very, very badly. Because they had to show their gold digging licences every month. And most diggers didn’t even have a licence because they were sooo expensive. For 1 month it was 14 shillings. It might not seem like a lot now, but back then it was sooo much money.

One of the character traits was courage. Because when you mine you could potentially die. Another one for courage is definitely that it takes courage for people living outside of Australia to come to Australia to Mine because there is  a very high chance that you won’t find gold, so maybe they can’t afford a plane ticket back to there home. But also definitely persistence, because some miners in Fly A Rebel Flag didn’t find gold so they persisted to find some, and some struck lucky.

Some challenges people faced were getting sick and getting very hungry. Because when you dont find gold then you don’t have money for food, medicine or any of your needs.

Have you ever read a book about gold mining? If so then be sure to comment which one!

I really hope that you guys have learnt something today.

Library Reflection

Dear readers,

My name is Rohan, and I like to read.

I love to read about humour and sport.

I like to read about humour because I like to laugh and when I read humour books I crack up with laughter. In this genre, I would recommend the Diary Of a Wimpy Kid. It is a very funny book about a guy called Greg, he has to annoying brothers, called Manny and Rodrick,  Rodrick is so annoying to Greg. It is a very funny book.

I like to read sport books because I would call myself a pretty sporty guy. I also like to read sport books because they always keep me up to the latest news which is always good. I would recommend the mania books because they have an activity for you to do on each page. It’s sort of like a Where’s Wally book except you have to find different objects around the page.

At the moment my book chat book is called War horse by Michael Morpurgo. A quick briefing of the book would be:

A horse and a boy have a strong bond for one another. One day the the horse gets taken away to go to war. But the boy couldn’t bare to be without his partner so he tried and tried to get him back. But it didn’t work. So the boy signs up for the war…

I have definitely enjoyed Warhorse so far although it was a bit hard to under stand I tried to figure it out and I did. I would definitely recommend it to years 5-6.

I hope you have enjoyed my blog post!

Judging Eve Pownall

Judging information books

This term year 4 has been judging Eve Pownall information books.

A good information book is one with good pictures, a good layout and has appropriate information.

In year 4 we had to judge which book we think would be the best book out of the following, Make Believe, The Happiness Box, Bouncing Back,Our Birds and Waves.

I think Make Believe was the best because it was clear about what it was teaching us about, about the eye and why we see things weirdly and differently. I gave Make Believe a 30/30. I really enjoyed looking at the pages because each passage matches the picture and each illusion was so cool and hard to look at. The layout was really good  because there was no white, only if it was to do with the illusion. And last of all the information, the information was amazing because the book told us why you see somethings and not others or others and not somethings.

Which book did you choose.

Leave a comment if you liked my choice.

Bye

Experiments Experience

“20 minutes is over, get the materials out!” I shouted as the group did what I said. What is the height of the paper?”

“6.7cm.” Eva replied.

“Roger that.” Edward said as he wrote it on our professional sheet of paper.

“How about the polar fleece.” I said.

“8cm,” Emilia snapped.

“And what about the cotton?” I asked Edward.

“10cm! WOW!” That has definitely won.” Edward screamed.

In week 6, we started our science experiments, we got put into groups of four and three. I was put with Emilia, Jerry and Edward. Our aim was to find out the amount of water that absorbed on each 3 pieces of material. Our materials were, Cotton, Paper and Polar fleece.

2 things our group probably did well was, putting the materials in at the same time as we started the stopwatch, and we worked well together. Something we could work on would be taking the materials out of the water and dropping them back in the water. Luckily Edward was watching and saw where the materials were before we dropped the materials back in the water. And to double check, we had trusty technology. (The video.) I think our group showed collaboration because we never argued.

Thanks for reading. Leave a comment if you learnt something. I definitely know I did.
